-stress from financial worries (no/wrong education, lack of work ethic, caving in to peer pressure to be mediocre, ego/dishonesty)

-epidemics (every midwit an infectious disease expert, forced to have physical contact with masses if poor, public transport, industrial era jobs, etc.)

Hands down the best post I've read from BTB. It ties directly in what my close group has always said regarding my work ethic, "slow down, live life" "You're only in your 20's once"

The "money is the root of all evil" narrative is hilarious. The actual verse is:

"The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

Anyone who has been reading btb knows that money is just a tool.

Due to my upbringing (lots of moving around, strict parents, etc.), I was kind of always an outcast. It used to frustrate me a lot when I was growing up in the Bible Belt and saw others with their large friend groups while I barely fit in. I used to want to be that popular guy, sadly enough, because society does put a lot of pressure to be social (you see it in movies, social media and everywhere).

Moving from small city Bible Belt to NYC (then out of NYC after the mandates) changed my perspective in a huge way. In the past 3 years, I have completely changed from wanting a large social circle and all that. Looking back at it as I approach 30, though I am not successful in life (yet), I think it actually saved me and even led me to finding WallStreetPlayboys.

After getting some friends though and being more social in recent years, I have learned a few things which relate to your thread:

1. Bros before hoes is a fucking lie, most of your guy friends will turn on you to get with the hot girl in your life.

Nothing red pills you more than dating a beautiful woman and seeing how the same bros you used to drink with start getting envious. Quite a few guys will use that chance to even make moves on your girl. Bros before hoes is a sham.

2. Most of these "friends" and crews gossip about each other a lot!

You'd think these people are tight for life but it isn't really so. A lot of these people find out each other's dirty secrets and they tell it to anyone who would listen. Literally all of these brunches are people gossiping about their crew.

3. The more they put up on social media, the sadder they are and more they are going through.

Now you would think that they are smiling in their IG posts and happy about all that is going on, that's not really true. In fact, most of the times the more they do this, the more they have going on their lives that is not ideal. I've seen this so much.

I've learned more but that will just make the post longer. I am seeing things the way you are, especially with how bad things got with the pandemic and the media around it, and now I live to move to a small mountain town and have some solitude. With how much mask Karens and militant pro-vaxxers I ran into in my time in NYC, which had me fleeing the city, I am just so happy now to slowly be away from it all.

College student writing here.

I go to a New England liberal arts school. Ridiculously woke.

It doesn't make sense to complain about it, or protest against it. Would achieve nothing, except getting hated. A way I deal with this is by listening. I speak about myself only when asked, and even then only sparingly. People love it; it's done wonders for my social life.

If you're in a similar situation you should read '48 Laws of Power' and 'The Art of Seduction,' both by Robert Greene (I think BTB recommends them in Efficiency). They were very insightful.

I don't think there's some grand media conspiracy of squid game VIPs pulling the strings to keep people down here. It's as simple as the free market media product evolving to meet the demand, which as you say is 'People would much rather have their egos/feelings stroked vs. concrete actions steps to improve their lives.'

It's as simple as that, the conspiracy stuff is a bit paranoid imho.

And why does mainstream media continue to amplify these messages?

1. journalists are part of a heirarchy that incentives status via "access" to higher status individuals (why grant an interview to someone who criticizes, even if there is truth there). The way to grow your career is to level up who you can talk to. Ultimate prize is access to the president or some other high status person.

2. Everything we read is filtered through the journalists level of understanding/development. Dichotomous (yes/no, black/white) thinking is more likely than thoughtful nuanced stories.

3. Status driven heirarchy = low responsibility, why bother finding out the nuance in a story (or if it's even true!) when you can just ask an expert? After all, if your story is wrong it's their fault, their the expert.

One Solution to get closer to truth and nuanced perspective is to get news from outside the status driven heirarchy (substack).

Another big aspect is "safetyism"which has snowballed tremendously. I grew up as a "free range" kid, and it was the norm among the middle class at least. I would have gone to jail if I did that with my kids, so sometimes you don't have a choice.

100% agree.

Just read an article in the Wall Street journal about 'toxic positivity' and how you need to validate people's shitty emotions.

Unreal.

Maybe a typo? "Why is the villain always rich." Or maybe I am just misunderstanding...
